Here's your chance to sample this new bread at the Middle Georgia GIG meeting June 19.
A few weeks ago (around May 15,) I received a sample package of the Nature's Own gluten-free bread, from the Flowers Baking Company . I was pleasantly surprised by the taste of both the breads -- they honestly reminded me of the Nature's Own diet bread, which I ate for years before I was gluten free.
Which is good. I used to love that bread, and this so reminded me of it.
But as my other gluten-free friends were making French toast and toast and grilled cheese with the bread, I tried them the way I try all gluten-free bread -- with butter. Alone. Plain.
See, if a bread doesn't pass the bread and butter sandwich test for me, it's not going to make it to my lunch pail or my dinner plate. And right now, there are only a small few that pass that test.
This passed. More than passed. And with it available for a reasonable price in Atlanta, it just adds to the growing availability of gluten-free breads that taste good!
Here's the release from the Flowers Baking Company, the makers of the bread.
Nature’s Own Welcomes Gluten Free Consumers Back to Bread
Fresh, Pre-Sliced Gluten Free Bread Debuts in Select Atlanta-Area Grocery Stores
Thomasville, Ga. April 22, 2010 – Following a strict gluten free diet can be a daunting and frustrating task, but is a fact of
life for the one out of every 133 Americans suffering from celiac disease or gluten sensitivity.* For this unique group,
grocery shopping can be a constant battle to find products that contain the magic words—gluten free. To help these
consumers, Nature’s Own has created gluten free bread that is non-refrigerated, pre-sliced, and perfect for toasting and
sandwiches. The bread debuts May 10, 2010.
“Gluten is common in many every day foods,” says Evette O’Connor, registered dietician and Nature’s Own sandwich
chef. “That’s why people on gluten free diets must be very focused and careful about what they eat. Now that Nature’s
Own Gluten Free bread is available, those with celiac disease or gluten sensitivity can once again walk down the aisle of
their local grocers and pick up a loaf that meets their strict dietary needs.”
As an industry leader, Nature’s Own stepped forward with the fresh Gluten Free loaf to provide options for all consumers
who enjoy bread – one of the most prevalent staples in American diets. “We recognized the challenge that consumers on
gluten free diets face and developed a bread that’s not just gluten free—it’s fresh, soft and delicious, too,” says Sherry
Harper, brand manager, Flowers Foods.
Nature’s Own Gluten Free bread is produced in a dedicated facility that is wheat and gluten free. Available in two
varieties, Extra Fiber White and Healthy Multi-Grain, Nature’s Own Gluten Free bread is sure to be a favorite with any
gluten sensitive consumer. Gluten Free bread is 100% natural and contains no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors or
high fructose corn syrup. Cholesterol and trans fat free, these loaves contain eight grams of whole grain and three grams
of fiber per slice.
The bread is being introduced in select Atlanta Publix, Kroger, and Wal-Mart stores in 20 oz. packages; suggested retail
price is $5.99.

we're excited to have their GF breads at Ingles. They are on stand alone racks and in the "premium" bread section. - Leah - Ingles Dietitian
I think this is a very cool turn of events. Will look forward to trying it. I rather fantasize about having a bread that both Mr. GFE and I could use and enjoy.
